QUESTION
What
is the difference in energy content of raw and boiled rice?
ANSWER:
The energy content of raw
rice is 3620 cal/kg with 12 per cent water content whereas that of boiled
(cooked) rice is 1098 cal/kg with 73 per cent water content. Another variety is
known as parboiled rice. Parboiling is a hydrothermal treatment followed by
drying before milling for the production of milled parboiled grain.
During parboiling, the B vitamins
and minerals from hulls, bran and germ will be leached into endosperm and hence
loss during polishing is minimised. The energy content of parboiled raw rice is
3703 cal/kg with 10 per cent water content whereas that of boiled (cooked)
parboiled rice is 1057 cal/kg with 73 per cent water content .

QUESTION:
Why are all the planets in the universe spherical in shape?
ANSWER:
Dip a finger into a bowl of water and then take it out. Now watch the drop of water as it trickles down the finger and drops down. You will notice that the drop of water acquires a spherical shape. Place a drop of mercury on a smooth surface. It attains a spherical shape, this phenomena is due to the cohesive force (force of attraction between the molecules of same element) which brings the molecules closer.
But then why does it take a spherical shape, why not a cubic one? This is because, out of all multidimensional geometric figures, sphere has the least surface area. Thus all particles try their best to attain a spherical shape in order to reduce their surface area. It is for the same reason that when you pour any liquid in space they attain a spherical shape. But this is not the case with solids since their molecules are compactly packed and cannot be displaced. When a new star is born the gas clouds around it condenses to form planets. The dense gas passes through three states, the gaseous state, the molten liquid state and finally the rigid solid state. When a planet is in the first two states it attains a spherical structure due to the cohesive force as mentioned in the illustration. Later the molten planet solidifies into a rigid planet like Earth.

QUESTION:
Why is the voltage of electric power always given in multiples of 11 such as
110V, 220V, 440V & 11 KV?
ANSWER:
The electric power in use
today, is of A.C. (Alternating Current) in nature. But, before the advent of AC
power generating electrical machines, the sources of electricity were primary
cells whose power is D.C. (Direct Current) in nature.
So, when machines were developed
to produce AC electricity, their capacity was to be compared with the already
available DC electricity. Thus a value called the RMS (Root Mean Square) value
for the AC electricity was coined. This RMS value equated the power of the AC
electricity with the DC electricity. This RMS value is the effective or virtual
value of the AC electricity. It is of prime importance practically, because all
general-purpose electrical indicating instruments record only the RMS value of
their respective parameters.RMS value of AC electricity could be calculated
either by the mid-ordinate method or by the analytical method and is equal to
0.707 x Max. value of measuring quantity. But, it is easier to calculate the
average value or the arithmetic mean value of the AC electricity than to
calculate the RMS value and the average value is equal to 0.637 x max. value of
measuring quantityA factor could be calculated to relate the RMS value and the
Average value. That is the Form Factor, which is equal to:
Form Factor = RMS Value/ Average
value = 0.707 x Max Value/ 0.637 x Max. Value = 1.11

QUESTION:
What is atrial fibrillation?
ANSWER :
Atrial fibrillation is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia. In arrhythmia the atria beats rapidly, chaotically and ineffectively. It is a kind of heart malformation that occurs due to abnormal rhythm of the heart.
A coordinate contraction of all the heart muscles at once, which is required for the pumping cycle leads to a normal rhythm of the heart. But abnormal rhythm of the heart results from cardiac impulses that have gone wild and violent with the auricular muscle mass and ventricular muscle mass, which are respectively called Atrial fibrillation and Ventricular fibrillation.
Since auricular muscle mass is entirely separated from the ventricular muscle mass and insulated from each other by fibrous tissue, these two fibrillations are entirely independent of each other.
The mechanism of atrial fibrillation is identical with that of ventricular fibrillation except that the process occurs in the atrial muscle mass instead of ventricular muscle mass. A very frequent cause of atrial fibrillation is atrial enlargement. It results due to heart valve lesions that prevent the atria from emptying adequately into the ventricles.
In atrial fibrillation the atria become useless as primer pumps for the ventricles. Even so, blood flows positively through the atria into the ventricles and the efficiency of ventricular pumping is decreased only 20 to 30 per cent.
Therefore in contrast to the lethality of ventricular fibrillation, a person can live for months together or even years with atrial fibrillation though at a reduced efficiency of overall heart pumping. The onset of atrial fibrillation can cause palpitation. It may precipitate or aggravate cardiac failure in, patients with an abnormal heart, especially those with mitral stenosis or poor left ventricle function.

QUESTION:
Why does the
surface of the incandescent light bulbs become progressively Greyer over time?
ANSWER:
The greying of the inner surfaces of incandescent bulbs is the result of
gradual evaporation of tungsten from the filament while the light is on. This
evaporation eventually makes the filament so thin it burns out.
Various
methods have been developed to reduce greying. Filaments of the first
incandescent lamps burnt in a vacuum, but it was soon found that introducing
inert gas to the bulb reduced the rate of greying.
A
mixture of nitrogen and argon is used today. In addition, ``getters'' reactive
metal such as tantalum and titanium can be placed near the filament to attract
the tungsten so that it is not deposited on the glass.
Alternatively,
a small amount of abrasive tungsten powder can be placed in the bulb. Shaking
it occasionally will remove the grey coating from the surface of the glass.
Greying
can almost eliminated by introducing a small amount of the halogens iodine and
bromine. As tungsten evaporates from the filament, it reacts with the halogens
which then redeposit the tungsten on the filament. This keeps the bulb wall
clean.
To
prevent the tungsten halides from condensing on the bulb and breaking the
cycle, the temperature of the bulb wall must be at least 500 -C. This is too
hot for glass bulbs, which normally operate at about 150 -C, so fused quartz
(silicon dioxide) must be used instead.
Compared
with ordinary incandescent lamps, quartz-halogen lamps have longer lives and
maintain their light output over time. For example, a quartz-halogen lamp with
a 2000-hour life.

QUESTION:
How are diet eggs
produced?
ANSWER:
Another name for diet eggs is "designer eggs". The name was coined
after extensive research conducted at the University of Alberta, Canada for 12
years. Apparently, it is in the feeding process where the secret of diet eggs
lies.
The
feed is being manufactured by the company itself. Normally, Omega-3 poly
unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and vitamin E protein are incorporated into
natural grains and then fed to the chicks.
The
hens lay eggs which are low in cholesterol and resistant to pathogenic bacteria
as Salmonella. Currently in India there are two such diet egg producers. One is
at Mysore and the other is at Bannerghatta in Bangalore.
